How to Identify Authentic Sambalpuri Handloom

Learn to distinguish a genuine hand-woven masterpiece from power-loom fakes.

The Threat of the Power Loom

With the rising popularity of Sambalpuri designs, the market has been flooded with cheap, mass-produced screen-printed copies made on power looms. These fakes not only deceive buyers but threaten the very livelihood of traditional weavers. Here is how you can ensure you are buying an authentic hand-woven Sambalpuri masterpiece.

1. Check the Reverse Side

This is the most foolproof method. Because Sambalpuri uses the Baandha (tie-dye) technique where the yarn itself is dyed before weaving, the design should be identical on both sides of the fabric.

  • Authentic Handloom: The colors and motifs will be just as vibrant on the back as they are on the front.
  • Fake/Printed: The reverse side will be noticeably faded, dull, or completely plain, as the print only sits on the top surface.

2. Look for the "Feathered" Edges

In true Ikat weaving, creating perfectly straight lines is mathematically impossible. When you look closely at a motif (like a flower or a geometric square) on a genuine Sambalpuri saree, the edges of the design will appear slightly blurred, feathered, or jagged.

This beautiful "blur" is the hallmark of human craftsmanship—it is the result of the dyed threads aligning on the loom. If the motif has razor-sharp, computer-perfect edges, it is almost certainly a screen-printed fake.

3. Feel the Texture and Weight

Authentic Sambalpuri cotton is renowned for its breathability and slightly coarse, organic texture. Over time, with repeated washing, genuine cotton will become softer and more comfortable. Power-loom fakes often use synthetic blends (like polyester) which feel artificially smooth, lightweight, and do not breathe well in summer heat.

4. The Pinhole Marks

If you inspect the edges (the selvedge) of an authentic handloom saree, you will often find tiny pinholes running along the border. These marks are created by the pins used to stretch and hold the fabric taut on the traditional wooden loom during the weaving process. Power loom fabrics do not have these marks.
