The Divine Connection

At the heart of the Sambalpuri tradition lies a deep spiritual connection, primarily with Lord Jagannath of Puri, the presiding deity of Odisha. The traditional colors of red, black, and white—widely used in authentic Sambalpuri handlooms—are highly symbolic:

The art form saw a major revival in the mid-20th century, championed by visionaries like Padmashree Dr. Radhashyam Meher, who modernized the traditional equipment and introduced sophisticated geometric and floral designs. Today, Sambalpuri Ikat has transcended its regional boundaries, earning a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, protecting its authenticity and cementing its status as a global symbol of high fashion and cultural pride.
